The vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has called for an independent investigation into suspected artificial intelligence-generated photographs and questionable records in the preliminary voter register released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kwankwaso questioned how the suspicious images were included in the register and whether the identities associated with the records had undergone proper verification.
In a statement shared on his X handle, the former Kano State governor welcomed INEC’s decision to investigate the matter but insisted that the process must be transparent, thorough and independent of the commission.
“The investigation must be thorough, transparent and independent,” he said.
Kwankwaso also demanded that the findings of the investigation be made public and that anyone found responsible for wrongdoing be held accountable under the law.
He further called for an independent audit of the preliminary voter register to identify questionable entries, duplicate records and potentially artificial identities.
The development has raised questions about the verification process used in compiling the voter register and the measures needed to ensure its accuracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The outcome of the proposed investigation and audit could help clarify the circumstances surrounding the disputed records and establish whether any irregularities occurred during the registration process.
