The Governor of Oyo State and presidential candidate of the Advanced Peoples Movement (APM), Seyi Makinde, has criticised President Bola Tinubu over his trip to Saudi Arabia to pray for Nigeria.
Makinde argued that the President did not need to travel outside the country to pray for Nigeria, insisting that prayers could be offered and answered within the country.
The governor made the remarks while reacting to reports of Tinubu’s trip to Saudi Arabia, saying Nigerian leaders could remain at home and pray for the country and its citizens.
“I read on social media that our President is travelling to Saudi Arabia to pray for Nigeria. Prayers are answered even in this country. We will stay here and pray for our country and leaders,” Makinde stated.
He further argued that leadership should involve staying close to the people and sharing in their challenges rather than travelling abroad for religious activities.
According to him, the President could pray for Nigeria at the Presidential Villa, in churches, mosques or any other location within the country, as such prayers would still be heard by God.
Makinde also maintained that his party, the APM, would not embark on foreign prayer trips but would remain in Nigeria to pray for the country and its leaders.
His comments come amid ongoing public concerns over economic hardship and insecurity, as well as debates surrounding the frequency of foreign trips by Nigerian political leaders.
