South Africa head coach, Hugo Broos, etched his name into FIFA World Cup history on Sunday despite Bafana Bafana’s elimination from the tournament.
At 74 years and 79 days old, Broos became the oldest coach ever to manage a team in the knockout stage of a FIFA World Cup, surpassing the previous record held by Óscar Tabárez, who was 71 when he guided Uruguay to the quarter-finals of the 2018 edition.
South Africa’s historic milestone, however, was overshadowed by a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Canada in the Round of 32.
A dramatic stoppage-time strike from Stephen Eustáquio sealed victory for the co-hosts, sending Canada through to the Round of 16 while ending South Africa’s World Cup campaign.
Despite the disappointing exit, Broos’ record-breaking achievement stands as a notable milestone in FIFA World Cup history.
