Tambuwal Warns Judiciary: ‘Don’t Be Used to Undermine Nigeria’s Democracy’

Former Sokoto State Governor and serving senator, Aminu Tambuwal, has urged members of the judiciary to uphold integrity and resist any attempt to compromise Nigeria’s democratic system.

Tambuwal made the call on Tuesday while speaking at the national convention of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) held in Abuja.

Addressing participants at the event, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives expressed concern over what he described as “very interesting times” in the country, noting that some individuals who present themselves as democrats are now revealing their true character in governance.

He directed his appeal beyond party members to leaders of national institutions, with particular emphasis on the judiciary, urging them to remain impartial and committed to justice.

Tambuwal referenced the controversial annulment of the June 12, 1993 election, warning judges and justices against allowing themselves to be used in ways that could damage the nation’s democratic foundation.

“Let no judge or justice allow himself to be used to destroy Nigeria,” he cautioned.

The senator stressed that history would judge the actions of individuals in positions of authority, adding that future generations are relying on today’s leaders to safeguard the country.

He further urged judicial officers to remain mindful of their responsibilities, noting that their decisions carry lasting consequences for the nation’s stability and democratic institutions.

Tambuwal also warned against undue influence, calling on members of the judiciary to resist pressure from individuals or groups seeking to manipulate the legal system for personal or political gain.

He concluded by reminding those in positions of authority that accountability extends beyond public scrutiny, emphasizing that their actions would ultimately be judged both by history and by God.
