The Ogun State Government has commenced a statewide school enrolment campaign aimed at tackling the challenge of out-of-school children and ensuring that more children have access to basic education.
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, disclosed this while leading an enrolment drive across the four divisions of the state ahead of the 2026/2027 academic session.
The exercise took government officials to markets, motor parks and other public places, where parents and guardians were sensitised on the importance of enrolling school-age children.
Arigbabu particularly encouraged parents and guardians with children between the ages of three and six to take them to any nearby public primary school for free registration.
According to the commissioner, the initiative has been sustained since the beginning of the Dapo Abiodun administration as part of its commitment to providing free and qualitative education across the state.
“This is what we have been doing from the inception of the present administration and we have seen improvement in enrolment,” Arigbabu said.
He added that the positive response and feedback from residents had strengthened the government’s expectation that more children would return to school, thereby reducing the number of out-of-school children in Ogun.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs Oluwatosin Oloko, appealed to market women and other parents to desist from sending children and wards out to hawk during school hours.
Oloko urged parents to take advantage of the state government’s free education policy by enrolling their children and helping to secure their future.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Chairman of the Association of Primary School Headteachers of Nigeria (AOPSHON), Tajudeen Adeosun, assured parents that headteachers and teachers were available to facilitate the registration of pupils.
Adeosun said registration for the 2026/2027 academic session is ongoing daily from 9am to 1pm at public primary schools across the state.
Some market leaders, including the Iyalojas of Oke-Aje, Ilaro, Lanfewa, Elega and Kuto markets, commended the state government for its efforts to ensure that every child in Ogun has access to education.
