The National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, has revealed that internal challenges, including poor funding and lack of structural readiness, were key factors behind the party’s losses in recent elections.
Aregbesola made the disclosure on Tuesday during the party’s ongoing national convention, where he reviewed the ADC’s performance in the November 2025 Anambra State governorship election and the February 26, 2025 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council polls.
According to him, while external factors such as the power of incumbency and monetisation of the electoral process played significant roles, the party also faced serious internal setbacks.
“Our party participated in the 2025 Anambra State election and the February 26 FCT local government elections. We were not victorious for various reasons, including the use of incumbency power, monetisation of the electoral process, and misuse of state resources by our opponents,” he said.
“On our part, we suffered from poor funding and the general non-readiness of our structure.”
Despite the setbacks, Aregbesola expressed optimism about the party’s future, noting that lessons have been learned from the experience.
He added that the ADC is now repositioning itself ahead of upcoming governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states.
In the FCT Area Council elections, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) secured five out of the six council seats, while the remaining seat was won by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
