Lionel Messi, Barcelona’s star player for nearly two decades, has demanded to leave FC Barcelona after the club’s humiliating 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals on Friday, 21 August 2020.
The Spanish giants confirmed on Tuesday, 25 August 2020, that Messi sent a certified letter stating his intention to leave by way of a clause in his contract allowing him to unilaterally terminate the contract.
Barcelona’s defeat to Bayern on Friday was the club’s heaviest in the club’s history of nearly 75 years, one of the worst defeats in the players career.
Although Barcelona maintains that the clause expired in June and his contract stays until the end of 2021 season, Messi’s lawyers argue that the season within the meaning of the clause did not finish on 31 May due to the coronavirus pandemic and that Messi therefore retains the option to terminate the contract.
