Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has paid glowing tribute to former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), on the occasion of his 84th birthday, describing him as a statesman whose commitment to national interest paved the way for Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999.
In a message posted on his verified X account on Saturday, Atiku praised Abdulsalami for placing the country’s interests above personal ambition during a critical period in Nigeria’s history.
According to Atiku, the former military leader demonstrated exceptional statesmanship by overseeing a peaceful transition to civilian rule, a move he said earned him a place among the architects of modern Nigeria.
“At a critical period in our nation’s history, you placed national interest above personal ambition and guided the country through a peaceful transition that restored democratic governance. That singular act of statesmanship secured your place among the architects of modern Nigeria,” Atiku stated.
The former vice president also commended Abdulsalami’s enduring dedication to peace, national unity, reconciliation, and democratic values, describing him as a leader of rare wisdom, courage, and moderation.
He noted that Abdulsalami’s life and service continue to serve as a reminder that true leadership is defined not by the power one holds, but by the sacrifices made in service to the nation.
Atiku expressed confidence that the elder statesman would continue to contribute his vast experience and moral authority towards promoting peace, good governance, national cohesion, and democratic ideals in Nigeria and across Africa.
He further prayed for God’s continued blessings upon Abdulsalami, wishing him good health, strength, peace of mind, and many more years of impactful service to humanity.
