The 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has accused the Federal Government of failing in its constitutional responsibility to protect the lives and property of Nigerians.
Obi made the allegation in a post on his verified X handle on Saturday while reacting to recent attacks on Otukpo-Nobi and Efeyi-Ugboju communities in Benue State, where several people were reportedly killed, injured or abducted.
He called on the government to demonstrate greater commitment to securing citizens and addressing the ungoverned spaces that have become breeding grounds for insecurity.
Obi said he visited Otukpo-Nobi on Friday, where more than 10 people were reportedly killed or declared missing, while several others sustained injuries and were receiving treatment in hospitals.
He also visited Efeyi-Ugboju, where he said more than 13 people were reportedly killed and several others injured.
According to him, residents also informed him that 14 people had been kidnapped along Ankpechi Road earlier that same day.
Obi said he joined residents in praying for the victims at the site of the mass burial and visited hospitals to sympathise with the injured and offer support.
He stressed that the primary responsibility of government is to guarantee the security and welfare of its citizens.
“The primary purpose of government is the security and welfare of its citizens. When the government fails in this responsibility, as it has with the people of Otukpo-Nobi, Efeyi-Ugboju, and other troubled communities, it must be reminded of that sacred obligation,” Obi said.
He expressed condolences to the families of those killed and prayed for the quick recovery of those injured in the attacks.
