Lagos Red Line Boosted with New 24-Car Trains as Capacity Expansion Drive Intensifies

The Lagos State Government has taken delivery of an additional set of 24-car trains to strengthen operations on the Lagos Red Line and expand passenger capacity along the corridor.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu disclosed this on Thursday, stating that the new rolling stock will improve service efficiency and significantly reduce waiting times for commuters.

According to the governor, the development aligns with the state’s broader vision of building a reliable and efficient transport system. “We have received a new set of 24-car trains to reinforce the Lagos Red Line fleet. This will increase capacity, shorten wait times, and enhance the overall commuting experience for residents,” he said.

The Lagos Red Line, inaugurated in February 2024, spans approximately 37 kilometres, connecting Agbado in Ogun State to Oyingbo on Lagos Island. The route traverses key commercial and residential hubs, including Ikeja, Oshodi, Mushin, and Yaba, providing a critical mass transit alternative in one of Africa’s most densely populated cities.

Developed under Lagos’ rail master plan, the Red Line runs alongside the standard gauge track of the Nigerian Railway Corporation and links with the Lagos Blue Line at designated interchange points, supporting the state’s push for an integrated, multimodal transport network.

Since its inauguration, the line has recorded steady growth in passenger traffic, reflecting rising demand for faster and more dependable alternatives to road transport amid persistent congestion across the metropolis.

The expansion forms part of ongoing efforts by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority to enhance rail infrastructure, improve connectivity, and integrate services with bus rapid transit and water transport systems. Authorities are also considering extending the Red Line beyond its current endpoints to further ease urban mobility.
