Iran Warns Ukraine of ‘Unforeseen Consequences’ After Caspian Sea Attack on Vessel

Tehran, Iran — Iran on Monday issued a strong warning to Ukraine, threatening “unforeseen consequences” after Kyiv claimed responsibility for a long-range strike on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea over the weekend.

Speaking during a weekly press briefing, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei condemned the attack as an “illegal and unjustified act,” accusing Ukraine of violating the United Nations Charter.

“This action by Ukraine was an absolutely illegal and unjustified act, contrary to the Charter of the United Nations, as well as a dangerous act of adventurism that will certainly not go unanswered by us,” Baqaei said.

He added that the consequences of Ukraine’s actions “will certainly be unforeseen,” while insisting that Kyiv would be held accountable for the incident.

The warning follows a statement by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday confirming that Ukrainian forces had carried out long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea targeting vessels transporting military cargo linked to Iran.

Iranian authorities said the attack caused an Iranian vessel to explode, leaving one sailor dead and several others injured.

“The Ukrainian regime must certainly be held accountable for it,” Baqaei said, without providing details on the nature or timing of Iran’s potential response.

The latest exchange marks a significant escalation in tensions between Tehran and Kyiv, raising concerns over the widening regional implications of the ongoing conflict.
