Former Delta State Governor and Senator, Ifeanyi Okowa, has declared that President Bola Tinubu came into office at a critical period in Nigeria’s history, saying the administration’s economic reforms are already yielding positive results and deserve continuity beyond 2027.
Speaking in Asaba while receiving the national leadership of the Working People United (WPU) on a courtesy visit, Okowa said the President had taken bold decisions that were beginning to reposition the nation’s economy and strengthen public finances.
According to him, the removal of fuel subsidy and other economic policies have significantly improved the financial stability of states and local governments.
“Outside fuel subsidy removal, President Tinubu has grown the economy to the extent that local governments and states are now stabilised. They were not stabilised before now.
“By May 2023, no fewer than 27 states were owing salaries because they could not pay workers. Today, all states and local governments are able to pay. It is not magic; somebody is behind it, and it is the courageous President Tinubu,” Okowa said.
The former governor urged Nigerians to continue supporting the President’s reform agenda, expressing confidence that a second term would enable Tinubu to consolidate the gains already recorded.
“We all know that if he is supported for a second term, the economy of this country will be refocused to the desire of the citizenry,” he added.
Okowa also highlighted the Federal Government’s National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) as one of the administration’s landmark initiatives, revealing that over 1.6 million tertiary institution students have benefited from the scheme.
He noted that although many students initially dismissed the programme as a scam, it has continued to provide financial support to eligible beneficiaries, urging those yet to apply to take advantage of the opportunity.
Maintaining that President Tinubu deserves another term to complete the ongoing reforms, Okowa said Nigerians would ultimately appreciate the long-term benefits of the administration’s policies. He also called on members of the Working People United to mobilise support for the President ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Earlier, the National Coordinator of the Working People United, Comrade Williams Akporeha, said the delegation visited Okowa to familiarise him with the group’s objectives and inaugurate its Delta State chapter.
Akporeha explained that the organisation comprises public and private sector workers, self-employed individuals and artisans, adding that it is committed to promoting good governance and responsible politics.
He also pledged the group’s support for Okowa’s senatorial ambition, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and President Bola Tinubu ahead of the next general elections.
