The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has ordered the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras on the First Niger Bridge to curb the vandalisation and theft of critical bridge components.
Umahi gave the directive on Thursday during an inspection of the bridge, where bolts, expansion joints and iron bars supporting the structure had reportedly been removed by vandals.
The minister expressed concern over the damage, particularly the theft of bolts holding the bridge together and the disconnection of an overhead steel bar, warning that the situation could pose a serious safety risk.
“We saw this vandalisation on social media. We want to thank members of the public for bringing this to our attention,” Umahi said.
He directed the Controller of Works in Anambra State, Timothy Emenike, to immediately procure replacement bolts and commence repairs, including welding work.
Umahi also ordered the installation of solar-powered streetlights and CCTV cameras across the bridge, with the surveillance system to be linked to the police and the relevant authorities.
He said the measures would help security agencies identify and apprehend anyone caught attempting to vandalise the bridge.
“I have better things to do than to keep coming here to inspect vandalisation of infrastructure built by the Federal Government for the people,” the minister said.
Addressing concerns about reports that the First Niger Bridge was shaking, Umahi explained that some movement was normal for bridges and attributed the condition partly to the bridge’s bearings and the additional dead load from the asphalt.
He announced that maintenance work would commence on the bridge and that the structure would be closed at night while the repairs are carried out.
During the inspection, Umahi also visited the Second Niger Bridge, where he raised concerns over erosion and sand excavation around its foundation.
The minister ordered security personnel to arrest anyone found excavating sand around the bridge, stressing that such activities could further threaten the safety and stability of the infrastructure.
He directed officials to take immediate action against those involved rather than merely reporting the activities to the ministry.
