President Bola Tinubu has explained the rationale behind the sweeping reforms recently approved for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), describing them as a major step toward preparing young Nigerians with practical skills for national development.
In a statement shared on his verified X account on Wednesday, the President said the reforms, approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Monday, represent the most significant overhaul of the NYSC scheme since its establishment in 1973.
According to Tinubu, the changes are designed to create meaningful opportunities for young people and fulfill his administration’s commitment to placing youth at the centre of national development.
“On Monday, at the Federal Executive Council, our administration approved the most consequential reforms of the National Youth Service Corps Scheme since its establishment in 1973,” the President said.
He recalled the promise he made during his inauguration to empower young Nigerians and women, stressing that the NYSC reforms are part of delivering on that commitment.
“On the day I was sworn in as your President, I promised to create meaningful opportunities for our young people. I said women and youth would feature prominently in our administration, and this reform is partly the actualisation of that promise,” he added.
Tinubu also acknowledged the NYSC’s longstanding role in promoting national unity but noted that evolving national realities require the scheme to be repositioned.
“For 53 years, the NYSC has served the cause of national unity. That mission remains important and must be preserved. But the Nigeria of today demands more,” the President stated.
