The National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Seriake Dickson, has accused unnamed individuals of attempting to undermine and destabilise opposition political parties in Nigeria.
Dickson made the allegation during an appearance on Sunday Politics, a Channels Television programme, while reacting to the recent judgment of the Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State, directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the NDC as a political party.
According to him, ongoing legal and political actions against opposition parties are part of a broader effort to weaken alternative political platforms ahead of future elections.
“What people are trying to do is to look for flimsy excuses to truncate the political opposition, destabilise, weaken and scatter the political opposition, which is why it is worrisome,” Dickson said.
Referring to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dickson alleged that similar tactics had been deployed against the party.
“With the African Democratic Congress (ADC), it was one Nafiu Gombe, who was there on the day they were holding the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to formally appoint David Mark and the other leaders. I can’t speak much on that,” he stated.
Speaking on the NDC, Dickson expressed confidence in the party’s growth and leadership, insisting that it has emerged as a credible political platform despite the challenges.
“And now, for a party that is growing, that we have worked so hard and presenting credible and dynamic political leaders, probably one of the most charismatic set of leaders converging now in the NDC, this has come up,” he added.
The Federal High Court in Lokoja recently ordered INEC to register the NDC as a political party, a ruling that has generated fresh debate over the country’s evolving political landscape.
