British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation after spending less than two years in office, bringing an abrupt end to a tenure marked by policy reversals and declining public support.
Speaking in an emotional address outside 10 Downing Street on Monday, Starmer said his decision was driven by what he believed was in the best interest of the country.
“Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party,” he said.
Starmer, who led the Labour Party to power, confirmed that the process of selecting a new party leader would begin in July. He added that he would remain in office as prime minister until a successor is elected and formally takes over, a process expected to be completed by September.
His resignation comes amid mounting political pressure and growing dissatisfaction among voters, raising fresh questions about the future direction of the Labour government and British politics.
