The Senate has approved a ₦50 million donation to the families of five individuals who lost their lives during the abduction of pupils and teachers from two schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, announced the intervention during Wednesday’s plenary, describing the deaths as a painful sacrifice in Nigeria’s ongoing fight against insecurity.

According to Akpabio, each of the five bereaved families will receive ₦10 million in recognition of the ultimate sacrifice made by their loved ones. The beneficiaries include the families of two teachers and three soldiers who died during the tragic incident and subsequent rescue operation.

The late teachers were identified as Michael Oyedokun, who was reportedly beheaded by the abductors while in captivity, and John Olaleye, who was allegedly shot dead during the attack on the school.

The fallen military personnel were identified as Lieutenant F.A. Isaac, Private Silas Musa, and Sergeant Abena John Jerome, all of whom were killed during the mission to rescue the abducted victims.

Akpabio also commended the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies for successfully rescuing the abducted pupils and teachers after 56 days in captivity.

He stated that the financial support is intended to provide relief to the grieving families while honouring the courage and sacrifice of those who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The abduction occurred on May 15, when gunmen attacked two schools in Oriire Local Government Area, taking several pupils and teachers hostage.
