Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said his role in the political contest ahead of the 2027 general elections is to keep opposition leaders under pressure and prevent them from becoming comfortable.
Wike made the remarks on Friday while speaking with journalists during an inspection of ongoing infrastructure projects in Abuja.
Commenting on the state of the opposition ahead of the elections, the minister said the prolonged crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had weakened the party to the point where it could no longer be clearly identified as the leading opposition force.
According to him, the absence of a formidable opposition party has changed the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
“I don’t want them to feel well. It’s not my wish that they should feel well,” Wike said.
“My business is to make them not to feel well all the days. Because they will be having high blood pressure. Yes, that’s my job.
“When you are having a contest with somebody, your business is not to make him feel well. Your business is to make sure you beat him thoroughly.”
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and a member of the PDP, has remained involved in the party’s internal crisis and has been at odds with several opposition figures.
He also dismissed concerns about how former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, may be reacting to recent political developments.
“How Atiku feels, how Obi feels, it does not give any headache. If I know how they feel now, I will add more crisis for them,” he said.
The minister’s comments come as political activities and realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with parties and political figures positioning themselves for the contest.
