The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has commenced the screening of presidential aspirants, including former candidate Adewole Adebayo, as part of preparations for its national convention ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Wednesday in Abuja, SDP National Chairman, Professor Sadiq Gombe, said the party had concluded extensive arrangements to ensure a credible convention capable of producing candidates who can challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
Gombe disclosed that the party constituted several committees to oversee different aspects of the exercise.
“We have set up over four committees, including the Screening Committee, Electoral Committee, Convention Committee, and several sub-committees, each with clearly defined responsibilities to ensure a credible exercise,” he said.
According to him, the screening exercise is being conducted at the party’s conference hall located at the SDP National Secretariat, the party’s registered office with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He explained that the exercise would cover aspirants contesting various elective positions across the country.
“The screening exercise will cover all aspirants contesting for elective positions, including the office of the president, governorship seats across the 36 states, National Assembly, and State Houses of Assembly,” Gombe stated.
The SDP chairman also expressed confidence in members of the committees, urging them to uphold fairness, transparency, and diligence throughout the process.
Chairman of the Screening Committee, Air Vice Marshal Sadiq Abubakar Lima, stressed the need for strict adherence to the party’s guidelines during the exercise.
“Despite our different levels of familiarity, we must approach this assignment with diligence and integrity,” Lima said.
