The House of Representatives has called for the strict enforcement of regulations governing the siting and operation of gas filling stations nationwide, following a recent gas explosion in Lagos that left several people injured and caused significant property damage.
The resolution was adopted on Wednesday after a motion of urgent national importance was presented by Hon. Adesola Samuel Adedayo (APC, Lagos). The lawmaker drew the attention of the House to an explosion that occurred in the early hours of May 5, 2026, along Adeleye Street in the Apapa Federal Constituency.
According to Adedayo, the explosion took place at a construction site located behind two shops, leading to extensive destruction of nearby buildings, substantial financial losses, and injuries to at least five individuals, including a student reportedly on his way to school.
He commended the prompt response of residents and the Lagos State Fire Service, whose swift intervention helped rescue victims and facilitate their evacuation to Gbagada General Hospital and other nearby medical facilities for treatment.
Expressing concern over the increasing frequency of gas-related incidents, particularly in densely populated and low-income communities, Adedayo warned that continued regulatory lapses could pose severe threats to lives and property.
In response, the House mandated relevant regulatory bodies to enforce existing safety guidelines more rigorously across the country to prevent further occurrences.
Additionally, lawmakers directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other appropriate agencies to provide immediate relief materials to those affected by the Apapa explosion.
