The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned the alleged attack and obstruction of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during his visit to Benue State.
The party alleged that Obi’s convoy was blocked by suspected thugs, preventing him from gaining access to Yelwata community, where more than 270 people were reportedly killed in recent attacks.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the NDC alleged that the group was led by an aide to Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, and was armed with dangerous weapons.
According to the party, the group blocked Obi’s convoy and allegedly prevented him from entering the community.
Obi, who arrived in Benue at about 9 a.m., said his visit was aimed at mourning with the victims and families affected by the killings in Yelwata.
He said, “I came to Benue not for politics but to mourn with our people, to listen to families who have lost loved ones, and to offer our solidarity during a moment of unimaginable pain.”
According to Obi, his convoy was stopped by individuals chanting, “Peter Obi, go back,” forcing him to abandon plans to proceed to the affected community.
The NDC described the alleged incident as troubling and condemnable, insisting that a visit intended to show solidarity with grieving families should not have been obstructed.
The party said Nigerians, particularly residents of Benue, deserved to live and travel safely, farm their lands without fear and enjoy adequate protection of their lives and property.
It added that despite being denied access to Yelwata, the party and its presidential candidate remained committed to supporting the victims, their families and the community.
The NDC called on the Benue State Government and relevant security agencies to investigate the incident, identify those responsible and ensure the safety of citizens and political leaders seeking to show solidarity during periods of crisis.
“We will not be deterred,” the party said, adding that it would continue to advocate for what it described as the fundamental responsibility of government — the protection of lives and property.
