Hunter Biden has revealed that his father, former United States President Joe Biden, is facing increasing health challenges as he undergoes treatment for prostate cancer.
Speaking in an interview published by the BBC on Saturday, Hunter said the cancer had spread to his father’s bones and described the condition as painful and debilitating.
“I wish he would complain more, because it’s not good — the cancer has spread,” Hunter said, adding that the disease had metastasised to Biden’s bones “and further.”
“It’s very painful… very debilitating. Cancer is really hard. It’s really sad to watch,” he said.
Hunter, Biden’s only surviving son, also spoke warmly about his father’s role within the family, describing him as “the centre of our family” and praising him as “the best father, the best husband, the best grandfather.”
Biden announced in May 2025, four months after leaving the White House, that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer.
The former president has since undergone treatment and previously offered an optimistic assessment of his condition, saying doctors expected him to respond to medication.
“The prognosis is good, we’re working on it,” Biden had said, explaining that he was expected to take medication for six weeks as part of his treatment.
More recently, Biden said his treatment was progressing well and thanked supporters for their prayers and goodwill.
“I’m dealing with a cancer diagnosis, been getting treatment, and it’s going really well,” he said. “I want to thank all those who have offered their prayers and support and well-wishes. It’s meant the world to me and to Jill.”
The former president has also said he has been spending more time with his family while undergoing treatment.
Biden’s health became a major issue during the final months of his presidency and his 2024 re-election campaign. He withdrew from the presidential race in July 2024 and was replaced as the Democratic Party’s nominee by then-Vice President Kamala Harris, who went on to lose the November election to Donald Trump.
Biden’s memoir, Promise Me, America, is scheduled for publication in November.
