Fashion designer Veekee James has responded to criticism over her husband, Femi Atere, frequently accompanying her to public events, insisting that their close bond reflects their understanding of marriage.
Speaking in a video shared on Snapchat on Sunday, Veekee addressed comments from a social media user who questioned why Atere is often seen with her, suggesting he lacks a life of his own outside their marriage.
Rejecting the criticism, the entrepreneur said she and her husband intentionally share nearly every aspect of their lives, describing their relationship as one built on unity rather than separation.
“Yes, my husband does not have a life of his own. His life is my life, the same way I don’t have a life of my own,” she said.
Using the analogy of a padlock and its key, Veekee explained that she and her husband see themselves as inseparable partners.
“My life is his life. He is me and I am him. Together we are like padlock and key.”
She also criticised the notion that married couples should maintain separate social lives, arguing that such views reflect a misunderstanding of the institution of marriage.
“When you marry your own, separate him. When you marry your own, remove him from your life and keep him somewhere else. You don’t know what marriage is,” she said.
According to Veekee, their partnership extends to every aspect of their lives, with each spouse considering the other an integral part of their identity.
“His life is mine, my life is his. Everything he is, is mine.”
The fashion designer made it clear that public criticism would not change their lifestyle, saying Nigerians should expect to continue seeing them together at events.
“You’ve not seen anything. You will see me and my husband anywhere possible, everywhere possible—you will see us.”
Veekee ended the video on a lighthearted note, affectionately describing Atere as her “personal handbag” while sharing clips of the couple together.
