Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, has assured Nigerians that the Federal Government will complete all ongoing infrastructure projects under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing road construction as a key driver of economic growth and job creation.
Speaking during an inspection of federal road projects in Ebonyi State over the weekend, Umahi said the Tinubu administration remains committed to delivering strategic infrastructure nationwide to improve connectivity and stimulate economic development.
He said the ongoing projects have generated thousands of direct and indirect jobs while boosting commercial activities in communities along the project corridors.
“The President means well for the country. The ongoing infrastructure projects are creating jobs through road construction, reinforcement works, project yards, and business opportunities for suppliers of construction materials, as well as traders operating along the project corridors,” the minister said.
Umahi explained that the government’s adoption of reinforced concrete pavement technology would improve the durability of federal roads while increasing demand for locally produced cement, thereby supporting the growth of Nigeria’s cement industry.
He acknowledged that not all national challenges could be resolved within three years but maintained that the administration had recorded significant progress in infrastructure development and deserved the patience and support of Nigerians.
The minister also argued that the South-East has witnessed unprecedented federal investment under the current administration and urged residents of the region to recognise the government’s efforts rather than focus solely on criticism.
On the political climate, Umahi criticised some supporters of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, alleging that they often attack individuals with opposing views. He added that winning a presidential election requires broad national support beyond any single region.
Providing an update on the road project under inspection, Umahi disclosed that about 30 per cent of Section One, covering approximately 125 kilometres across two local government areas in Ebonyi State, has been completed. He said the project has improved access to communities and expanded opportunities for trade and development.
The minister also revealed that mobilisation has commenced on Section Two of the project, a 168-kilometre stretch spanning parts of Ebonyi, Enugu and Kogi states, including the Oweto Bridge corridor.
According to him, the new phase will strengthen regional integration, improve transportation and enhance economic activities across the South-East and neighbouring regions.
Umahi further stated that funds borrowed by the Federal Government are being channelled into critical infrastructure projects rather than recurrent expenditure such as salaries or the purchase of official vehicles.
He concluded by calling on the people of the South-East to support President Tinubu’s re-election bid in the 2027 general election, saying the administration has demonstrated its commitment to the development of the region.
