Chief Judge Urges Caution as Judiciary Embraces Artificial Intelligence

JALINGO – The Chief Judge of Taraba State, Justice Joel Agya, has urged judicial officers to ensure that the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the justice system is guided by the core principles of judicial independence, impartiality, integrity, accountability and fairness.

Justice Agya gave the charge on Friday in Jalingo while declaring open a two-day training programme for High Court judges on the application of Artificial Intelligence in judicial processes.

Describing AI as one of the most transformative technological developments of the modern era, the Chief Judge noted that the world is experiencing an unprecedented technological revolution that is changing the way institutions function, decisions are made and services are delivered.

“Artificial Intelligence is rapidly reshaping the way institutions operate, decisions are made and services are delivered. The justice sector is not immune to these developments,” he said.

According to him, courts and judicial institutions across the world are increasingly exploring ways to leverage emerging technologies to improve efficiency, enhance legal research, expand access to justice and strengthen judicial administration.

Justice Agya, however, cautioned that the growing use of AI also presents significant ethical, legal and practical challenges, including concerns relating to accuracy, confidentiality, transparency, bias and judicial responsibility.

He explained that the training programme was designed to equip judges of the Taraba State High Court with the knowledge and skills required to understand both the opportunities and limitations of AI, while ensuring its responsible application within the judicial process.

“The objective is not to replace judicial reasoning or discretion, but to enhance our understanding of technological tools that may assist us in the performance of our duties while preserving the human judgment that remains at the heart of justice delivery,” he stated.

Speaking at the event, the Managing Director of Lex Decipher Tech Ltd, Mr. Segun Meleki, commended the leadership of the Taraba State judiciary for embracing innovation and demonstrating commitment to the responsible integration of technology into judicial operations.

Meleki said Artificial Intelligence offers enormous opportunities for improving justice delivery despite the challenges associated with its use. He expressed confidence that participants would gain practical knowledge and skills for the effective application of AI in judicial processes.

He further noted that judges across different levels of the court system are increasingly aligning with the global trend of integrating Artificial Intelligence into legal and judicial operations to enhance efficiency and service delivery.
