
South African community activist Thato Molosankwe has been shot dead at his home in Lomanyaneng village, outside Mahikeng in the North West Province, prompting a police manhunt and widespread calls for justice.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), Molosankwe was attacked by unknown gunmen in the early hours of Wednesday, sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have since launched a murder investigation and appealed to members of the public with information to come forward.
Molosankwe was widely known for his community activism, particularly his campaigns against crime, corruption, and concerns surrounding undocumented foreign nationals in parts of the North West Province. He also worked closely with local communities and law enforcement in efforts to improve public safety.
The Acting National Commissioner of SAPS directed the North West Provincial Commissioner to deploy maximum resources to track down those responsible for the killing, assuring residents that every effort would be made to bring the perpetrators to justice.
North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Wessels Morweng, condemned the killing and appealed for calm while police conduct their investigation. He urged community members to cooperate with investigators by providing any information that could assist in identifying the attackers.
Political party ActionSA also condemned the murder, describing Molosankwe as a fearless community leader who spoke out against criminality and corruption, and called for the swift arrest and prosecution of those behind the attack.
As of the time of filing this report, police had not announced any arrests or established a motive for the killing. The investigation remains ongoing.
