June 12: Replicate 1993 Credible Election in 2027, Peter Obi Tells Nigerians

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general election, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians to use the June 12 Democracy Day celebration as an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey and demand the conduct of credible elections similar to the historic June 12, 1993 poll.

In a statement posted on his X handle on Friday, the former Anambra State governor described June 12 as a defining symbol of Nigeria’s democratic struggle and a reminder of the power of the people’s collective will.

Obi said the annual observance of Democracy Day should prompt Nigerians to critically evaluate the country’s political and governance systems, particularly the transparency of elections and the performance of democratic institutions.

“Today, we are observing a day that should mean a lot to us as a people who cherish democratic principles. Every year on June 12, the conversation inevitably turns to a critical assessment of the state of the nation,” he said.

He questioned whether current elections measure up to the credibility and transparency of the 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history.

According to him, Nigerians must continue to ask whether the social contract between leaders and citizens is being honoured and whether governance institutions are truly serving the interests of the people.

Obi noted that June 12 represents both a painful chapter in Nigeria’s history and a lasting victory for democracy, stressing that the significance of the date goes beyond its official recognition as Democracy Day.

“For us in Nigeria, June 12 is not merely a date on the calendar; it is the emotional and structural bedrock of the modern democratic identity,” he stated.

He added that the occasion serves as a blend of reflection and aspiration, honouring the sacrifices of the past while inspiring citizens to pursue a better democratic future.

The former governor expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, insisting that a truly democratic nation remains achievable.

“A New Nigeria of true democracy is possible,” Obi declared.
