Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has cautioned Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to exercise restraint in the discharge of his duties, reminding him that political power is transient.
Fayose gave the advice on Tuesday while addressing journalists during a visit to the residence of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja, in the Bodija area of Ibadan.
The former governor alleged that there were moves by the Oyo State government to dethrone the Olubadan, stressing that while political offices are bound by constitutional limits, traditional institutions derive their authority from divine and cultural foundations.
According to Fayose, the tenure of a governor is defined by the Constitution, whereas that of a traditional ruler is determined by destiny and divine will.
He noted that his visit was to show solidarity with the Olubadan amid the ongoing developments, urging the monarch to remain steadfast despite distractions.
“I was once a governor, and I understand how power works. Those in authority today must remember that their tenure is time-bound,” Fayose said.
He further emphasised that the Olubadan’s position transcends political cycles, expressing confidence that the monarch would outlive successive administrations.
Fayose also advised the traditional ruler to disregard criticism and external pressures, describing them as distractions, while reaffirming his support for the throne.
The visit comes amid heightened political tension in Oyo State over issues surrounding the traditional institution and governance.
