Activist and political advocate Aisha Yesufu has withdrawn from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial race for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), bringing an end to her ambition to contest the seat in the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Friday, Yesufu disclosed that the party had decided not to conduct primaries for the FCT Senate position, a development that effectively halted her bid for the ticket.
“Our party has decided not to conduct primaries for the Senatorial seat in FCT Abuja. It however intends to conduct primaries for House of Representatives! Go ahead and make your choice known!” she stated.
Despite stepping down from the race, Yesufu urged her supporters to remain calm and committed to the broader political objective ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
“I urge each and every one of you to remain calm and focus on the bigger picture, which is the presidential election. Nigeria will be OK!” she added, while expressing gratitude to supporters of the #AishaForSenate movement for their loyalty and dedication.
The activist further pledged to continue engaging residents across the FCT, revealing plans to visit all six area councils in the coming week to appreciate residents for their support and sustain advocacy for improved governance in the capital city.
“In the coming week, I will be returning back to all the six Area Councils, God willing, to appreciate them for the warm welcome and continue to forge ahead for a #BetterFCT,” she said.
Yesufu had declared her intention to contest the 2027 FCT senatorial election on May 6 after defecting to the NDC from the African Democratic Congress (ADC). She had explained that her decision was influenced by the leadership experience and opportunities she found within the party.
Her withdrawal comes amid speculations that the NDC may have ceded the FCT Senate ticket to Amanda Pam, an aspirant believed to have been with the party before Yesufu’s defection. However, the party has yet to officially react to the claims.
