Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has vowed to establish an independent commission of inquiry to investigate political killings and other acts of violence recorded during the election period.
Adeleke made the pledge in a statement delivered by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, while commiserating with families who lost loved ones in the violence.
The governor said his administration would ensure that those responsible for the killings are identified and brought to justice, regardless of their political affiliation or status.
“Every life lost is an Osun life. Politics should never cost anyone his or her life, irrespective of political affiliation,” Adeleke said.
He announced that the Independent Commission of Inquiry would be constituted immediately after the election to investigate all reported cases of killings and violence linked to the electoral process.
According to him, the commission would determine the circumstances surrounding the incidents and recommend appropriate measures to ensure that perpetrators face justice.
“The Commission will establish the circumstances surrounding these incidents and recommend appropriate actions to ensure that everyone responsible is brought to justice, regardless of political affiliation, position or influence,” he said.
Adeleke also disclosed that his administration would establish a support and compensation framework for families who lost relatives in the violence.
He assured that the victims would be appropriately honoured, stressing that the election would eventually end but the people of Osun State must continue to live together in peace.
“The election will come and go, but we will remain one people. We owe the dead justice, their families compassion, and the people of Osun a peaceful future,” the governor added.
