President Bola Tinubu has nominated four National Commissioners and two Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) to fill vacancies at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The nominations include three new National Commissioners, one reappointment and two Resident Electoral Commissioners for Ekiti and Jigawa states.
The nominees for National Commissioners are Professor Mustapha Aliu, representing the North-West, who is expected to replace Professor Abdullahi Zuru; Bashir Muhammed Umar, representing the North-Central, who will replace Professor Muhammad Adamu; and Oluwatoyin Babalola, representing the South-West, who is currently serving as the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun State.
Bala Bila, representing the North-East, has also been nominated for reappointment as a National Commissioner.
For the position of Resident Electoral Commissioners, Tinubu nominated Samuel Akinjide Akinleye for Ekiti State and Zahradden Basiru Sanusi for Jigawa State. Sanusi is expected to replace Professor Saidu Ahmed Babura.
The nominees are expected to undergo screening and confirmation by the Senate before assuming their respective positions.
Tinubu has called for an expedited confirmation process to ensure that the electoral commission fills the vacancies ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The appointments come as INEC prepares for the next general elections, with the commission expected to oversee the electoral process and coordinate preparations for the polls.
