A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Dan Ulasi, has warned that it will take extraordinary efforts to defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most strategic politicians.
Ulasi cautioned opposition parties against underestimating Tinubu’s political strength, noting that their divisions could make the task of unseating the President more difficult.
He made the remarks on Friday while speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show, where he reflected on the opposition’s performance in the 2023 presidential election and the challenges ahead of the 2027 contest.
The PDP chieftain recalled warning politicians in 2023 against taking Tinubu for granted, insisting that the former Lagos State governor had demonstrated considerable political strategy and organisational strength.
According to Ulasi, he had challenged the confidence expressed by some political leaders during an emergency meeting involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, governors and other political figures ahead of the 2023 election.
He said some participants had expressed certainty that Atiku would win, but he questioned whether the opposition had done enough groundwork to secure victory.
Ulasi recalled challenging those present to identify the political efforts that would guarantee Atiku’s victory over Tinubu.
He said his concerns were initially met with resistance, but Atiku later called him back into the meeting after he attempted to leave.
The PDP chieftain said the eventual outcome of the election vindicated his warning, as Tinubu emerged victorious.
Reflecting on the forthcoming election, Ulasi said the opposition was now more fragmented than it was in 2023, raising further doubts about its ability to defeat the incumbent President.
He suggested that the current political situation would require extraordinary intervention for any opposition candidate to overcome Tinubu.
“So only God will answer that question. Is there some divine process going on?” he said.
“But as things are on the ground, it will take some magic for anybody to stop Tinubu. I can tell you that.”
Ulasi’s comments come amid political realignments and ongoing discussions among opposition parties over strategies to challenge the APC in the 2027 presidential election.
