2027: PDP Faction Endorses Jonathan as Presidential Candidate Amid Deepening Party Rift

Ballot Not Courts Should Decide Election Winners, Says Jonathan

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by former Minister of Special Duties, Taminu Turaki, has formally adopted former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

The decision was ratified during a special national convention held at the faction’s secretariat in Area 10, Garki, Abuja, on Saturday.

Although Jonathan was absent from the convention, delegates and party stakeholders aligned with the Turaki-led camp unanimously endorsed his candidacy. A Certificate of Return was subsequently presented and received on his behalf by Bayelsa lawmaker, Fred Agbedi.

The endorsement marks the latest twist in the ongoing leadership crisis within the opposition party, which has seen multiple factions laying claim to the PDP structure ahead of the 2027 elections.

Meanwhile, a rival PDP faction reportedly aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, had earlier announced the emergence of Sandy Onor as its preferred presidential candidate.

The Wike-backed group had also dismissed reports suggesting that Jonathan had been adopted as the party’s presidential flagbearer, further highlighting the widening divisions within the PDP.

As of the time of filing this report, Jonathan has yet to publicly react to his nomination by the Turaki-led faction.

Political observers say the development could significantly influence the dynamics within the PDP as the party continues to grapple with internal disagreements and competing leadership claims ahead of the 2027 general election.
