2027: Kwankwasiyya Denies Rift Over Kano Tickets, Says Gawuna, Hanga Back Consensus Deal

The Kwankwasiyya Movement has dismissed reports of internal disagreement over the allocation of political positions ahead of the 2027 general elections in Kano State, insisting that all decisions were reached through consultation and consensus among key stakeholders.

The clarification follows the emergence of former Kano State Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, as the governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election under a consensus arrangement finalized on Thursday night.

Under the same arrangement, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the 2023 election who recently joined the NDC, was nominated as the party’s candidate for the Kano Central Senatorial District.

Speaking exclusively with DAILY POST, the spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Habib Saleh Mailemo, rejected claims of discontent within the movement, describing the process that produced the candidates as transparent and inclusive.

According to him, the movement, under the leadership of former Kano State Governor Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, successfully resolved issues surrounding the selection of candidates within 48 hours of the leader’s return.

“The Kwankwasiyya Movement is a highly disciplined organization with established mechanisms for addressing issues relating to political offices. Within 48 hours of the arrival of our national leader, consensus candidates emerged for the positions of governor, senators, House of Representatives and State Assembly members,” he said.

Mailemo noted that while outsiders may perceive the process as complex, members of the movement were fully informed and actively involved throughout the consultations.

He specifically dismissed reports suggesting that Gawuna resisted stepping down for Gwarzo, stating that the former APC governorship candidate participated fully in the discussions that led to the final decision.

“The decision did not exclude Gawuna. He was consulted and remained part of the process from beginning to end. At no point did he reject the arrangement,” Mailemo said.

He explained that Gawuna only requested time to consult with his associates before formally communicating his position.

“For someone who aspired to become governor in this election cycle, it was natural for him to take some time to reflect and consult. He later returned and accepted the decision,” he added.

Mailemo also addressed concerns over the fate of the incumbent senator representing Kano Central, Rufai Sani Hanga, whose seat is now expected to be contested by Gawuna.

According to him, Hanga fully understands and supports the consensus arrangement.

“Senator Rufai Sani Hanga is one of the leading figures in the movement. He accepted the decision and remains committed to the collective interest of the group,” he stated.

The spokesperson said the conduct of both Gawuna and Hanga reflects the unity, discipline and commitment that have long defined the Kwankwasiyya Movement.

“We are one family driven by discipline, dedication and a common goal of protecting the downtrodden and ensuring social justice,” he said.

Gwarzo’s emergence comes months after his resignation as Deputy Governor of Kano State in March, following a political fallout with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who reportedly defected to the ruling APC in January. His resignation came amid impeachment proceedings initiated against him by the Kano State House of Assembly.
