WBC Urges Adeleke to Forgive Political Opponents After Re-election

The World Bishops Council (WBC) in Africa has congratulated Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on his re-election and urged him to shun victimisation and revenge against political opponents and others who may have offended him during the election.

In a congratulatory message signed by the Africa Nuncio of the WBC, Bishop Seun Adeoye, and the council’s leader in Osun State, Bishop Mike Adekeye Adebomi, the bishops described Adeleke’s victory as God-ordained.

They urged the governor to focus on the welfare of residents and the implementation of projects capable of driving development across the state.

The council also commended Osun voters for remaining resolute during the August 15, 2026, governorship election, despite alleged pre-election threats and monetary inducements.

The bishops said the WBC had endorsed Adeleke before the election after prayers and consultations with affiliated bodies, including the World Federation of Churches (WFC) and the World Clergy Congress (WCC).

According to them, their decision was based on their belief that Adeleke was “God’s choice” for Osun State at the present time.

The council, however, cautioned the governor against using his renewed mandate to settle political scores.

“After this victory, we urge the Governor not to victimise anyone, or think of revenge against those who offended him.

“‘Avenge is mine,’ says the Lord. Rather, he should see his victory as God’s ordained and focus his attention on the people’s welfare and more projects that will lift the state up,” the bishops said.

The WBC further called on Adeleke to use his second term to address issues affecting residents and deepen development across the state.

Meanwhile, the Religious Engagement Committee (Christianity), a group formed in support of Adeleke’s re-election, also congratulated the governor and his administration.

In a statement signed by its Vice-Chairman, Pastor Wale Akinyemi, the committee said its members, drawn from all 30 local government areas and the five blocks of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), including its women and youth wings, would continue to support and pray for the governor.

The committee expressed confidence that Adeleke’s second term would bring further development to the state.

“We will always be there in prayers and supplications. We will ensure that Mr Governor succeeds in his herculean tasks. We are sure that the next four years shall bring more successes and more developmental projects,” it stated.
