Trump Pays $5.6 Million to E. Jean Carroll After Supreme Court Rejects Appeal

U.S. President Donald Trump has paid $5.6 million in damages to writer E. Jean Carroll following a civil court judgment that found him liable for sexually assaulting and defaming her, according to a court filing released on Tuesday.

The payment comes weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear Trump’s appeal of the May 2023 verdict, effectively allowing the judgment to stand.

Confirming the payment, Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan, said in a statement that her client had finally received the damages awarded by the jury.

“Three years ago, a unanimous nine-person jury found President Trump liable for sexually assaulting and defaming E. Jean Carroll. Today, we are pleased to report that she has received the damages payment the jury awarded her as a result of that verdict,” Kaplan said.

The case stems from Carroll’s lawsuit accusing Trump of sexually assaulting her in a New York department store in the mid-1990s and later defaming her by denying the allegation. In May 2023, a federal jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation, awarding Carroll $5 million in damages. An amended judgment later brought the total amount to approximately $5.6 million, which has now been paid.

The latest development marks another legal setback for Trump, whose effort to overturn the verdict ended after the Supreme Court refused to review the case in late June.
