President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has stirred political reactions after remarks suggesting continuity between his administration and that of former President Muhammadu Buhari, as he defended his government’s performance amid public criticism.
In a statement delivered during a recent public engagement, Tinubu described Buhari as a “partner” in governance, adding that his own presidency should be seen as part of a continuous political project within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“I took over leadership from myself; Buhari is me, he was my partner,” he was quoted as saying, in comments that have since circulated widely across media and social platforms.
The President further dismissed criticism of his administration’s performance, insisting that visible progress was being made under his leadership. He added that those unable to recognize improvements in governance would “need eyeglasses,” a remark widely interpreted as a rebuttal to opposition critiques.
Tinubu’s comments have sparked debate among political observers, with supporters describing the statement as symbolic of policy continuity between the Buhari and Tinubu administrations, while critics argue it reflects an attempt to blur distinctions between two separate governments.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari completed his two-term tenure in May 2023 after eight years in office before handing over to Tinubu following the presidential election.
The presidency has not issued an official clarification on the statement, but aides have previously maintained that Tinubu often uses metaphorical language when referencing political continuity within the APC-led federal government.
The remarks continue to generate discussion amid ongoing scrutiny of the administration’s economic reforms and governance record.
