The AAC candidate rejects criticism of his wage proposal as the subsidy debate splits the 2027 field.
The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has pledged to bring back the fuel subsidy scrapped by President Bola Tinubu’s administration if he wins the 2027 election.
The activist made the promise in a post on his official X handle on Monday. He also reaffirmed his plan to introduce a minimum wage of N500,000 a month for Nigerian workers.
Sowore dismissed efforts to undermine the proposal, saying that attempts to water down the N500,000 living wage with “funny statistics” would not change his position.
“Under our government, Nigerian workers will earn a minimum wage of at least N500,000 monthly. We will also restore the petrol subsidy,” he wrote. “Workers deserve wages they can actually live on.”
His stance adds to the national debate over the removal of the fuel subsidy, which has divided the leading contenders.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) flagbearer, Atiku Abubakar, has also promised to restore a form of subsidy, though his version would target domestic refiners.
Others have taken the opposite view. The candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) candidate, Seyi Makinde, have said they would not return to the old subsidy regime. Makinde has instead proposed cheaper domestic crude pricing for Nigerian refineries.
