The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has urged Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to take firmer action against individuals causing unrest and instability in the state.
Sanusi made the remarks during the traditional post-Eid visit to the governor in Kano, where he stressed the need for strong leadership backed by justice and authority.
Drawing references from the Holy Qur’an, the Emir said effective governance requires both fairness and the power to enforce law and order.
“In the Holy Qur’an, after Allah mentioned messengers and holy books, He also spoke about iron, which scholars interpret as a symbol of power and authority. Justice cannot survive without authority and strength,” he said.
The monarch commended Governor Yusuf for achievements recorded in key sectors including education, healthcare and social welfare, but cautioned him against extending undue respect to individuals lacking integrity.
“When you honour a respectable person, they remain loyal to you. But when you honour someone without good character, they become proud and disrespectful,” Sanusi stated.
The Emir noted that many residents of Kano now perceive the governor as overly patient amid growing disorder in parts of the state.
“Because of the disorder happening in Kano, people think the governor is too patient and that everyone can behave however they like,” he added.
He further advised the governor to assert greater authority in order to maintain peace and strengthen public confidence in government.
“My advice to you as a brother is to face this challenge and make people understand that Kano has a government. Anyone who follows the law should live peacefully, but whoever refuses should face the consequences,” the Emir said.
Sanusi also observed that reactions from the gathering indicated strong public support for a firmer approach to governance.
He assured the governor of the continued support of the Emirate Council, stressing that the future and stability of Kano depend on the success of Yusuf’s administration.
Responding, Governor Yusuf expressed appreciation to the Emir and members of the Emirate Council for their support and counsel.
The governor also apologised for the cancellation of the Hawan Daushe procession during the Eid celebrations, explaining that the decision was taken to prevent possible violence and safeguard lives.
“I want to assure the Emir and the people of Kano that since Allah made me governor, I have never feared anyone except Allah,” Yusuf said.
He explained that previous incidents of violence during public outings influenced his cautious approach to maintaining peace and security across the state.
