Retirees in Uniform: Ex-Police Officers Threaten Abuja Showdown as Pension Deadline Looms

0

Retired police officers are giving the Federal Government until October 15 to make good on long-promised pension reforms — or face a mass protest in Abuja on November 2.

The group, operating under the Contributory Pension Scheme, says it’s lost patience with what it calls broken promises from the National Pension Commission (PenCom) and the Inspector-General of Police. Kaduna State chapter chairman, retired Captain Mannir M. Lawal, laid out the grievance in a statement Monday: PenCom had reportedly committed to paying gratuities worth 300% of annual emoluments and raising monthly pensions to 100% of the applicable salary benchmark — commitments that were supposed to be fulfilled by the end of September but weren’t.

The retirees frame their anger in terms of service rendered: decades spent protecting lives, property, and public order, met with what they see as indifference at the negotiating table. They’re calling for concrete, verifiable action from the government, PenCom, and the IGP — not more assurances.

For now, organizers are stressing restraint, describing the planned demonstration as a peaceful, lawful last resort rather than a first move. They’re also calling on retired officers nationwide to stay unified and ready to join the protest if the October 15 deadline passes without action.
