The National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has criticised President Bola Tinubu over his decision to limit his participation in physical campaigns ahead of the 2027 presidential election, accusing him of running the country aground.
Baba-Ahmed reacted to Tinubu’s remarks during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja, where the President said he would prioritise governance rather than accompany campaign officials on nationwide tours.
Tinubu explained that the country required his attention and that he had responsibilities to fulfil while the campaign council mobilised support for his re-election.
“You’ve warned me not to allow the rigour of the campaign to distract me from governance, I hear you. I am in full agreement with your decision. Nigeria needs more attention now,” the President said.
He added that he would not be able to accompany campaign officials everywhere, noting that the government had financial obligations to meet.
“So, you will excuse me from going everywhere with you, we have bills to pay. The American creditors cannot wait,” Tinubu stated.
Reacting in a post on his X account, Baba-Ahmed said Nigerians were not expecting the President to participate extensively in campaign activities.
He argued that Tinubu’s decision would leave other members of the APC campaign council to travel across the country to solicit votes on his behalf while he remained focused on governance.
“@PBAT says Nigerians should not expect to see him extensively hustling for votes.
“He will be busy running a country he had run aground, while his appointees run around the country begging Nigerians to elect him again. Nigerians are not expecting to see him, nor are we surprised,” Baba-Ahmed wrote.
The PRP chairman’s remarks come amid growing political activity ahead of the 2027 general election, as the APC begins preparations for Tinubu’s re-election campaign and opposition parties intensify their criticism of the administration’s performance.
Tinubu has maintained that governance must continue alongside campaign activities, while members of his campaign council are expected to lead mobilisation efforts across states and local government areas.
