Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on the Federal Government and relevant security authorities to take urgent measures to end the persistent killings and insecurity across the country.
Obi made the call in a statement shared on his official X handle on Tuesday while reacting to the reported killing of 32 Nigerians in Ungushi, Sokoto State, and recent attacks in Ukum, Benue State, where several people were reportedly killed and others injured.
Describing the incidents as “deeply painful,” Obi said the victims should not be reduced to mere statistics, noting that they were parents, children, farmers and breadwinners whose deaths had left families and communities devastated.
“Let’s end this cycle of killings. The killings in Ungushi, Sokoto, where 32 Nigerians reportedly lost their lives, and the recent attacks in Ukum, Benue, where more lives have been lost and several others injured, are deeply painful,” he said.
Obi condemned what he described as a recurring cycle of killings, condolences, promises and inaction, urging governments at all levels to make the fight against insecurity a priority.
According to him, the country needs improved intelligence gathering, proactive security measures, swift responses to attacks, better protection for vulnerable communities and the diligent prosecution of perpetrators.
He also stressed that the government has a responsibility to protect the lives and property of citizens, saying Nigerians should be able to sleep peacefully in their homes, travel safely and access their farms without fear.
Obi expressed condolences to the families and communities affected by the attacks, praying for comfort for the bereaved and lasting peace across the country.
