Outrage as NLC Demands Urgent Action Over Oyo School Abductions

The Nigeria Labour Congress has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the nation’s security chiefs to take immediate and decisive action against rising insecurity following the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State.

President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, made the demand in a statement issued on Wednesday, describing the incident as another painful reminder of the worsening security situation across the country.

The reaction followed the reported abduction of at least 30 pupils and seven teachers by suspected bandits from Community High School and L.A. Basic School in Ahoro Esinele, as well as First Baptist School (Nursery and Primary), Yawota, all located in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Reports also indicated that one of the abducted teachers was allegedly decapitated by the attackers, further sparking outrage and renewed calls for urgent intervention by the authorities.

Condemning the incident, the labour union said governments at all levels must rise to their responsibility of protecting lives and property, warning that continued inaction could worsen the security crisis.

“Our security agencies should do a thorough soul-searching. It is superfluous to say it is their sacred duty to protect lives and property. We believe where there is a will, there will be a way. Address this challenge before it is too late,” the statement read.

The union further expressed frustration over what it described as repeated assurances without concrete results.

“We demand action now. We have had enough of sermons and condolence messages. For how long should we continue to bleed like this?” the NLC stated.

The incident has continued to generate widespread reactions from Nigerians, with many urging security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the release of the abducted pupils and teachers and prevent further attacks on schools.
