One person has been confirmed dead after a two-storey building under construction collapsed in the Fadeyi area of Lagos State in the early hours of Friday, with several others feared trapped beneath the rubble.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.
According to Oke-Osanyintolu, the agency received a distress call about the building collapse at 12:10 a.m., prompting the immediate activation of its Cobra Response Team from the Onipanu Base.
He said the emergency responders arrived at the scene at 12:12 a.m. and discovered that the two-storey structure, which was still under construction, had collapsed.
Preliminary observations indicated that some construction workers might have been trapped beneath the debris, prompting the team to commence search and rescue operations.
The agency said its personnel immediately began efforts to locate and evacuate possible survivors while implementing safety measures to protect trapped victims and emergency responders.
LASEMA added that rescue operations were ongoing to determine whether more people remained trapped beneath the rubble.
The cause of the collapse had yet to be established as of the time of the report.
