The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has ordered an immediate investigation into a viral social media video alleging unprofessional conduct by personnel at its Akwa Ibom State office in Uyo.
The Commission, which expressed serious concern over the allegations, said its personnel were expected to treat every complainant with dignity, respect and professionalism, regardless of any provocation.
In a statement issued by its Director of Corporate Affairs and External Linkages, Fatimah Agwai Mohammed, the Commission said its professional standards did not permit staff to act against complainants, even in provocative circumstances.
“Protecting human rights begins with how we treat those who seek our help. Every complainant must be treated with dignity, respect and professionalism,” the statement said.
The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Chief Tony Ojukwu, SAN, was said to have directed an immediate investigation to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
According to the statement, appropriate administrative action would be taken in accordance with extant rules if any infraction was established.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to providing accessible, free, timely and accountable services to members of the public and also urged members of the public experiencing difficulties accessing its offices to report such concerns through its toll-free line, 6472.
The Commission’s response follows the circulation of the video on social media, which purportedly showed an incident involving personnel at its Uyo office.
