
Veteran Nollywood actor, dramatist, filmmaker, and renowned scholar, Dr Kola Oyewo, has passed away at the age of 80.
The death of the celebrated theatre icon was announced on Friday by popular actor Kunle Afod in a post shared on Instagram.
Paying tribute to the late thespian, Afod wrote: “Kola Oyewo has taken his final bow. His remarkable talent, timeless performances, and immense contributions to the Nigerian theatre and film industry will never be forgotten. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Rest well, sir. Your work lives on.”
Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Ondo State, Oyewo began his illustrious acting career in 1964 with the renowned Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group. He later rose to become one of the most respected figures in Yoruba theatre and Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
Dr Oyewo gained widespread acclaim for his unforgettable portrayal of Odewale in the stage adaptation of The Gods Are Not to Blame, a role that cemented his place among Nigeria’s finest actors.
Over a remarkable career spanning more than six decades, he featured in several acclaimed productions, including Saworoide, Sango, Super Story, and numerous Yoruba-language films that helped shape and advance Nigeria’s movie industry.
Beyond the stage and screen, Oyewo distinguished himself in academia. He earned a doctorate degree in Drama from the University of Ibadan and lectured at Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer’s University, and Elizade University, where he mentored generations of students and theatre practitioners.
His passing marks the end of an era in Nigerian theatre and filmmaking, but his enduring legacy will continue to inspire future generations of actors, scholars, and creatives.
