The Bokkos Cultural Development Council (BCDC) in Plateau State has called on its people, particularly those in rural areas, to remain vigilant and maintain heightened security awareness throughout the Christmas period. This follows a spate of violent attacks that marred last year’s festivities, leaving hundreds dead in Christian communities.
In a statement signed by Chairman Barrister Farmasum Fuddang and Secretary Ambassador Duwam Bosco, the council highlighted reports of planned attacks in several communities. While some reports remain unverified by security agencies, the BCDC emphasized the importance of taking proactive measures to ensure personal safety.
The murder of Haruna Shol, a youth leader in Mbar, on December 17, has heightened concerns. Shol, a prominent community leader, was ambushed and killed on his farm in Garau village shortly after spearheading efforts to rebuild his community, which was devastated during last year’s Christmas attacks.
The statement also pointed to other recent incidents, including the December 6 killing of Mrs. Christiana Isaac Mahwash, a respected women leader in Fakkos. On November 26, a church compound in Maikatako was raided, resulting in the death of a civilian guard. Days earlier, a community leader in Tangur, Idi Dakum, was kidnapped and killed, following his efforts to mobilize security initiatives.
In October, five civilian guards were murdered in Rafut, Tarangol, as part of a series of attacks that claimed numerous lives in Bokkos communities. Over 100 people have been killed this year, many of whom were key to community security efforts. The council lamented the lack of arrests and expressed concern over the detention of some residents protecting their homes, underscoring the need for fair and effective security enforcement.
The BCDC urged communities to organize vigilantes, maintain constant alertness, and take legitimate steps to protect themselves. Farmers were advised to work and leave in groups, avoiding late hours in the fields.
The council called on security agencies to intensify efforts to protect vulnerable communities and bring perpetrators to justice while ensuring that civilians acting in self-defense are treated fairly.
