The National Secretary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Ikenna Enekweizu, has alleged that individuals opposed to the party’s expected presidential candidate, Peter Obi, are behind the court ruling seeking to deregister the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Enekweizu made the allegation on Friday while speaking during an appearance on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, in reaction to the ruling of a Federal High Court sitting in Lokoja, Kogi State, which ordered the deregistration of the NDC as a political party.
According to him, the legal action is part of a broader political agenda aimed at preventing a credible contest in the 2027 presidential election.
“Every Nigerian knows that what is happening in the political space today is predetermined by certain persons that do not want proper contest,” Enekweizu said.
He maintained that Peter Obi remains the preferred choice of the majority of Nigerians and insisted that the former Labour Party presidential candidate would emerge as the NDC’s flag bearer for the 2027 election.
“You don’t need anybody to tell you that Peter Obi will be our presidential candidate. It’s the choice of a gross majority of Nigerian people to assume the matter of leadership of this country come 2027,” he stated.
Enekweizu further alleged that political opponents who believe they cannot defeat Obi at the polls are orchestrating efforts to prevent him from appearing on the ballot.
“Some persons who know they do not stand a chance against him in the elections, who don’t want him to be on the ballot, are the ones behind this. That’s the reality,” he added.
The Federal High Court’s ruling has sparked fresh political debate as parties prepare for the build-up to the 2027 general elections.
