The National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Agbo Gilbert Major, has accused former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, of using the party as a political bargaining tool to advance his personal ambitions.
Major made the allegation during an interview on Trust TV on Tuesday, where he criticized Kwankwaso’s commitment to the party during the 2023 general elections.
Kwankwaso, who contested the 2023 presidential election on the NNPP platform, is now the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general election.
According to Major, Kwankwaso’s campaign activities during the 2023 election revealed that his primary interest was limited to Kano State and parts of Jigawa State, rather than building nationwide support for the NNPP.
“As the image maker of the party, I was not part of what they were doing,” Major said.
“At a point, I raised the alarm because it never appeared to me that Kwankwaso was seriously running a national campaign. While other presidential candidates were travelling across the country, he only visited a few states before abandoning the entire South-East and South-West.
“He focused mainly on Kano and perhaps part of Jigawa. It became clear to me that his real interest was Kano.”
Major further alleged that Kwankwaso merely used the NNPP as “a bargaining chip” for his personal political negotiations.
“But the truth is that he only used the party as a bargaining chip for himself. That’s exactly what happened,” he said.
Despite Kwankwaso’s exit, Major maintained that the NNPP remains active and is preparing for the 2027 elections.
“We are still alive. We have concluded the uploading of our National Assembly candidates and our presidential candidate,” he added.
