Presidential spokesperson Daniel Bwala has said state governors should be held accountable for the rising wave of kidnappings across Nigeria, arguing that insecurity at the grassroots reflects failures in governance.
Speaking during an interview on the Morayo Show, Bwala maintained that governors must take responsibility for every abduction that occurs within their states, stressing that most kidnapping incidents take place at the local government level.
“Every time someone is kidnapped or taken against their will in any part of Nigeria, the governor of that state should be held responsible,” he said. “Every local government area—all the kidnappings have happened in local government areas.”
Bwala also questioned how funds allocated under the Safe School Initiative were utilized by state governments. According to him, the programme was established to improve security in schools through measures such as perimeter fencing, early warning systems, and other safety infrastructure.
“There was a programme called the Safe School Initiative that began, and money was given to states to build fences around schools, set up early warning systems, and carry out all those safety checks,” he said.
He challenged Nigerians to demand accountability from their state governments, adding: “Ask your governor where that money was spent.”
